IQOS ILUMA Device

IQOS ILUMA is the fourth generation of IQOS, and it changed how the device heats tobacco. Earlier IQOS models pushed a heating blade into the stick. ILUMA has no blade at all. Instead, every TEREA stick contains a metal element sealed inside it, and the device heats that element by induction through the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM.

Two things follow from that. The blade can no longer snap, because there is no blade. And no tobacco ever touches the heating mechanism, so nothing gets left behind and the device never needs cleaning. If you have owned an IQOS 3 DUO and spent time with cleaning sticks and brushes, that is the difference you will notice first.

ILUMA works only with TEREA

ILUMA devices heat SMARTCORE sticks. That means TEREA, and in some markets DELIA and LEVIA.

HEETS will not work in an ILUMA. HEETS sticks are built for a blade, and an ILUMA has nowhere to put one. The reverse is also true: TEREA in an IQOS 3 DUO or IQOS ORIGINALS can damage the device, because the blade has no space to enter the stick.

If you are buying your first ILUMA, budget for TEREA as well. Your existing HEETS will not carry over.

All three heat at roughly 350°C and run sessions of up to six minutes or fourteen puffs. None of them needs cleaning.

IQOS ILUMA ONE

ILUMA ONE puts the holder and the charger in a single body. There is no pocket charger to carry and nothing to reassemble, which makes it the easiest model to live with and the lightest at 68.5 g.

The trade is that you press a button to start, because ILUMA ONE has no Autostart. Its battery is also smaller at 1728 mAh, although in practice you still get around 20 sessions before charging, because all of that capacity goes into one unit rather than being split between a holder and a case.

It is our cheapest ILUMA and the one we recommend to most first time buyers. If you want something simple that fits in a pocket and charges in about 90 minutes, this is it.

IQOS ILUMA Standard

The standard ILUMA splits into two parts. A slim holder does the heating, and a pocket charger refills it. The holder handles two sessions back to back before it needs the charger, and a fully charged pocket charger covers around 20 uses in total.

Two features come with that format. Autostart begins heating the moment you insert a TEREA stick and shuts the device off when you remove it, so most of the time you never touch a button. Heat up is also faster at around 15 seconds against the ONE’s 20.

There are smaller touches as well. Lift the holder when it is idle and status lights show how many uses are left. Double tap during a session and it vibrates to tell you roughly how much time remains. The IQOS app lets you adjust light intensity, vibration and Autostart itself.

Choose this over ILUMA ONE if you want Autostart and the option to carry just the holder when you know you only need a session or two.

IQOS ILUMA PRIME

PRIME is the standard ILUMA in a better body. The pocket charger is anodised aluminium with a textured wrap cover held on by magnets, replacing the plastic body and pivoting snap door of the standard model. It weighs about 171 g against roughly 147 g.

We want to be straight about what that does and does not buy you. PRIME uses the same SMARTCORE induction heating, the same 2380 mAh battery, the same two consecutive uses, the same 15 second heat up and the same session length. It does not taste different and the battery does not last longer. Some retailers claim PRIME has upgraded internals for faster or more even heating. That is not correct.

What you are paying for is materials, hand feel and the accessory range. PRIME takes interchangeable wraps and holder rings, so the device can be restyled rather than simply chosen in a colour. If that matters to you, PRIME is worth the difference. If you only care about the session, buy the standard ILUMA and spend the rest on sticks.

ILUMA and ILUMA i are not the same range

ILUMA i is the newer generation. It adds FlexPuff, which may give you up to four extra puffs when a stick has not been fully consumed, and the larger models add a touch screen and a pause function. ILUMA i ONE also has Autostart, which the original ILUMA ONE does not.

Common questions

Can I use my old HEETS with an ILUMA? 

No. ILUMA needs TEREA or another SMARTCORE stick.

Does ILUMA need cleaning? 

No. There is no blade and no tobacco residue. Keep the cap closed and the charging port clean.

Is PRIME better than the standard ILUMA? 

Only in build and looks. The heating, battery and session length are identical.

How long does a session last? 

Up to six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first.

Which model is best for a first ILUMA? 

ILUMA ONE. It is the simplest, the lightest and the cheapest.
